About Prairie View A&M University

Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) is a public historically Black land-grant university in Prairie View, Texas. Established in 1876, it is the second oldest public institution of higher learning in the state and the oldest public HBCU in Texas. PVAMU is a member of the Texas A&M University System and the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, offering a wide array of academic programs.

Academics

PVAMU offers baccalaureate degrees in 50 academic majors, 37 master's degrees, and four doctoral degree programs across eight colleges and the School of Architecture. The university is particularly strong in STEM fields, annually awarding the second most STEM degrees within the Texas A&M University System. PVAMU achieved R2 Carnegie Classification (Doctoral University; High Research Activity) in 2021, a distinction held by only 11 HBCUs. Notable programs include engineering, with the university leading a $40 million national University Transportation Center, and a strong English program preparing students for diverse careers.

International Students

The Office of International Student Services (ISS) at PVAMU provides support to international students, assisting with requests and immigration profiles. While specific diversity statistics for international students vary, PVAMU has a diverse student body with a significant percentage of students of color. The university aims to foster a multicultural learning environment and offers various student organizations for cultural integration. The International Student Portal allows students to manage requests and interact with ISS.

Campus & Location

PVAMU's main campus spans 1,440 acres in Prairie View, Texas, approximately 48.8 miles northwest of Downtown Houston. The campus is often referred to as "The Hill" and is considered one of the most beautiful in Texas. Prairie View itself is a vibrant college town with a small-town atmosphere, offering residents a sparse suburban feel. While the town provides a calm, slow-paced environment, some resources and diverse dining options may require a short drive. On-campus and some off-campus bus transportation are available, and the university also offers airport shuttle services.

Career Outcomes

Prairie View A&M University's Office of Career Services assists students and alumni with career exploration, development, graduate school applications, and employment opportunities. The university is committed to empowering students to enter the competitive global marketplace. The Roy G. Perry College of Engineering has a specialized Career Development Office to support engineering and computer science students with resume reviews, networking advice, and job search strategies. Career coaches are available for various fields, including criminal justice, communications, engineering, and business.
