About Middle East Technical University (METU)
Middle East Technical University (METU), a public research university established in 1956 in Ankara, Turkey, is renowned for its academic excellence and contributions to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. With a sprawling campus covering over 11,000 acres, including a substantial forest area and Lake Eymir, METU provides a unique blend of natural beauty and modern facilities. The university consistently ranks among the top universities in Turkey and globally, attracting a diverse student body.
METU offers 41 undergraduate programs across five faculties: Architecture, Arts and Sciences, Economic and Administrative Sciences, Education, and Engineering. The university also provides 105 master's and 70 doctoral programs through five graduate schools. English is the official language of instruction at METU, fostering an international learning environment. The Faculty of Engineering is particularly recognized for its strong programs and research excellence, with all undergraduate engineering programs accredited by ABET. METU emphasizes interdisciplinarity, critical thinking, and innovation, with a significant focus on research, leading to numerous international scientific publications and substantial research funding.
METU actively welcomes international students from over 90 countries, with the International Students Office (ISO) providing comprehensive support services from application through enrollment. While an English proficiency score is not always mandatory for application, admitted students may need to provide TOEFL or PTE scores or take the METU English Proficiency Exam. Merit-based scholarships are available, and the university aims to assist international students financially. METU's vibrant campus life is enriched by over 100 student clubs and societies, offering diverse opportunities for cultural integration and extracurricular engagement.
METU's main campus is situated approximately 10 km west of central Ankara, Turkey's capital city. The campus itself is a distinctive feature, transformed into a forest through ongoing efforts of students and volunteers since the 1960s, and includes Lake Eymir, offering recreational activities. Transportation to and from the campus is facilitated by METU district buses, EGO buses, minibuses, and taxis, with EGO buses being the most easily accessible. Ankara offers a rich cultural experience, and the university actively promotes sustainable transportation within its campus, encouraging walking and cycling.
METU is committed to the career development of its students, offering various services to help them transition into their professional lives. The university maintains strong links with industry and has its own science and research park, METU Technopolis (METUTECH), which houses numerous firms and fosters a vibrant startup culture. METUTECH is the first and largest science park in Turkey, supporting synergy between industry, academia, and public institutions, with a focus on high technology research, software development, IT, defense, and electronics. METU graduates are well-regarded for their academic and research skills, with many pursuing graduate studies or finding employment in various sectors.
