About Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków
The Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków (ASP) is Poland's oldest and most prestigious art academy, established in 1818. Located in the historic city of Kraków, ASP has been a pivotal institution in shaping Polish art and culture, known for its rich traditions and openness to contemporary challenges. It offers a dynamic environment for aspiring artists to develop their skills and creative vision.
The Academy provides education across seven faculties: Painting, Sculpture, Graphic Arts, Interior Design, Conservation and Restoration of Works of Art, Industrial Design, and Intermedia. The teaching approach emphasizes direct contact with artwork and practical studio work, fostering a "masters and pupil" relationship. Notable programs include Conservation and Restoration of Works of Art, which has significantly contributed to shaping Poland's restoration practices, and Intermedia, focusing on interdisciplinary contemporary art practices using new technologies. The curriculum combines traditional techniques with modern approaches, encouraging creative thinking and interdisciplinary projects.
The Academy offers various support services for international students, including orientation programs, Polish language courses, academic advising, counseling services, and accommodation assistance. While many programs are primarily taught in Polish, some courses and programs are available in English. The Academy participates in European student exchange programs like Erasmus+ and cooperates with universities outside the European Union, including those in Mexico, the United States, Ukraine, Israel, Canada, and Norway, fostering a diverse and dynamic learning environment. International students can also join the Erasmus Student Network (ESN) at Jagiellonian University for cultural integration activities.
The ASP campus is located in the heart of Kraków, a city renowned for its rich history, vibrant culture, and artistic heritage. The main building, a monumental edifice with a Neo-Renaissance brick facade, was erected in 1879 at Matejko Square. While the Academy does not have its own dormitories, it assists students in finding private accommodation or rooms in other university dorms. Kraków offers excellent public transportation, and the campus is conveniently located near the Main Rail Station, just two blocks from the Academy.
The Academy has a strong legacy of producing influential artists, designers, and conservators who have significantly contributed to Polish and international art. Graduates are well-prepared for careers in various artistic fields, with many becoming renowned painters, sculptors, graphic designers, and art conservators. The Faculty of Graphic Arts, for instance, frequently has its graduates and teaching staff serve as jury members at international graphic art, poster art, and animated film festivals. The Academy's Career Office provides support and guidance to students, and notable alumni include Oscar-winning filmmaker Andrzej Wajda and prominent figures in Polish Symbolism and Impressionism like Jacek Malczewski and Olga Boznańska.
