About Osaka Metropolitan University
Academics
OMU encompasses 12 undergraduate schools and 15 graduate schools, with a 16th graduate school opening in 2026. The university is particularly renowned for its strengths in engineering, medical and life sciences, urban sciences, and social innovation. OMU promotes an interdisciplinary and problem-based learning approach, preparing students to tackle complex global challenges. While most undergraduate classes are conducted in Japanese, requiring a high level of Japanese proficiency (JLPT N1 equivalent), some master's and doctoral programs offer English-taught courses.
International Students
OMU actively fosters an inclusive and diverse community, welcoming students from over 50 countries. The university provides comprehensive support services for international students, including tuition reduction and exemption, scholarships, and dormitory placements. An International Student Tutor System pairs international students with older students who offer support with studies, research, and daily life, including Japanese language assistance. Additionally, OMU organizes various clubs, cultural societies, and events to facilitate cultural integration and interaction between Japanese and international students.
Campus & Location
OMU boasts multiple campuses situated in key areas of Osaka, including the new Morinomiya Campus near Osaka Castle, which opened in late 2025. Osaka itself is a dynamic global city known for its rich culture and as the "kitchen of Japan," offering excellent culinary experiences. Campuses are well-connected by public transport, with locations easily accessible from major stations like Tennoji, Shin-Osaka, and Kansai International Airport. The Morinomiya Campus, envisioned as a "Forest of Knowledge," integrates smart technologies and environmentally conscious design, serving as a hub for cultural exchange and community collaboration.
Career Outcomes
Osaka Metropolitan University is committed to enhancing career outcomes for its graduates through robust career services and strong industry connections. The university's Career Center provides guidance, corporate seminars, and both online and face-to-face consultations to assist students with job searches and career path selection. OMU has established strong industry-university collaborations, including interactive matching events and research internships with numerous companies like Nomura Research Institute, NTT Data, Mitsubishi Electric, and Panasonic. The university also actively promotes a startup culture, aiming to foster 50 university-launched startups by 2030, supported by a dedicated Start-up Creation and Support Center.
